Inter vs. Getafe: match preview

INTER VS. GETAFE: MATCH PREVIEW

Tonight at 21:00 CEST Inter will be taking on Bordalás' Getafe in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League

GELSENKIRCHEN – Tonight, Inter will be facing José Bordalás' Getafe at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenskirchen, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 CEST. The Round of 16 Europa League clash will be played as a single-legged knockout tie rather than over two legs. Let's take a look at all the key facts, figures and trivia ahead of the match.

FACTS AND FIGURES

Conte's side come into this game after finishing the Serie A season with three points against Atalanta, which helped them to secure second place with a final points total of 82 points. Inter have managed to get on the scoresheet in their last eight matches in European football, with four wins, one draw and three losses over that run. Excluding finals, Conte's side have not played a single-legged knockout tie in a European competition since the tie-breaker of the 1966/67 European Cup semi-final, when, after two draws, the Nerazzurri finally overcame CSKA Sofia with a 1-0 win.

TOURNAMENT BRACKET, RULES AND REGULATIONS

Inter vs. Getafe and Roma vs. Siviglia will be the two Round of 16 ties that will be decided in a single-legged tie, as the first legs were never played before lockdown. The winner of Inter vs. Getafe will be taking on the winner of Rangers vs. Bayer Leverkusen. In the first leg of that tie, the Germans won 3-1 at home. From the Round of 16 onwards, all matches will be played behind closed doors in four designated German stadiums.

The teams will be allowed to make five substitutions, but they may only make changes on three occasions in the match, not including any changes made at half-time, after the end of regulation time, in extra time and at half-time of extra time. A sixth substitution is also allowed in extra time. Furthermore, teams will be able to choose from a greater range of players, with a matchday squad of 23 instead of 18, which has previously only been allowed in the final.

TRIVIA

Romelu Lukaku has scored in his last seven Europa League appearances, with a total of ten goals and three assists over that period. Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen has played a part in four goals in his last three Europa League games, with two goals and two assists.

50% of the goals scored by Getafe in the 2019/20 season (in all competitions) have come from their strike partnership of Jaime Mata and Ángel Rodríguez, with 14 goals each.

OUR OPPONENTS IN FOCUS

This evening’s match will be Getafe’s first ever competitive match against an Italian team. Only Sevilla (five), FC Basel (six) and Manchester United (seven) have kept more clean sheets than Bordalás’ Getafe this season in the Europa League. Getafe finished the La Liga season in eighth with a total of 54 points. The Azuolones finished with 14 wins, 12 draws and 12 losses in 38 matches played, scoring 43 goals and conceding 37.

ANTONIO CONTE’S THOUGHTS AHEAD OF THE MATCH

“Getafe are a strong, resilient side: they have a very specific style of play, where they prefer to go long, and latch on to second balls. They’ve got a strong, well-organised attack, with forwards who help out at the back and know how to hit teams on the counter. We know that it’ll be a tough game. We’ve got to prove that we deserve to progress in this competition, and we’ll only be going through if we show that we're the better side."

SAMIR HANDANOVIC’S WORDS

"This is an important competition, I think that all the teams will be approaching it in the same way. It's a big opportunity for all of us, but I think that we're doing well, both physically and mentally, and we're ready to give it our all. We don't know how far that can take us, but everyone needs to be aware that we're here, we're ready, and we'll be doing our best to go all the way."

MATCH OFFICIALS

Anthony Taylor will be refereeing Inter vs. Getafe. The Englishman will have Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn as his assistants, while the Fourth Official will be Chris Kavanagh. Stuart Attwell and Paul Tierney will be overseeing the VAR system.
